ABAI Conference Wrap Up!

June 10, 2018

I had a wonderful time in San Diego for the Association for Behavior Analysis International Conference in May 2018. I love visiting California, and it had been a looooong time since I'd been to San Diego. While I didn't have a lot of time to sight see, I did get a lot out of the conference, which was the whole point, so all good in the end :)

The conference itself runs over three days, with presentations/talks running from 8am until 6pm! They also have pre-conference workshops, and this time they had a post-conference workshop. I didn't get the chance to attend any of those, but have plenty of ideas from the talks I did attend.

There are generally a few thousand people that attend the annual conference. So it is a massive undertaking, with lots of rooms, exhibits, and things to learn. Prominent experts in the ABA field come together, as well as people who are completing their studies and sharing their research (like me!)

While most of the topics of talks focused on early intervention and autism, there were plenty of options for other areas of interest. I managed to attend multiple discussions (always seemed to be the same people in the crowd - and discussing!) on ABA and adult populations, as well as some parent training and supervision topics.

I was fortunate enough to also be able to present a poster on a little bit about what we are doing here in Australia. It was great to be able to chat to others who face similar difficulties with disseminating and practicing good ABA, due to the lack of awareness, funding issues, and many other factors.

The great part about this workshop, was having a friend to not only have dinner with every night, but just to share what we had learned that day, as we both had different areas of interest! There were also a lot of other Aussies there, which is great to see people making the trip across the ocean for the big conference (a big difference to what we will experience next month at the Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia conference in Brisbane!)
